Benefits of a No-Scalpel Vasectomy

Looking for a highly effective form of male birth control? Have you considered a no-scalpel vasectomy yet?

It’s understandable that the word ‘vasectomy’ can cause men to hesitate for fear of pain, scarring and complications. However, as technology continues to advance, the traditional method of this procedure is no longer the only method. The no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) is a gentler, less invasive method that offers several benefits in comparison to the traditional standard incisional vasectomy (SIV).

How Does It Work?

With the no-scalpel technique, the doctor makes a small puncture in the scrotum with a vasectomy clamp, as opposed to making an incision with a scalpel. The vas deferens, which carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra, is then accessed using the puncture, and either sealed, cut or blocked to prevent the passage of sperm. As the no-cut vasectomy involves only a small puncture, patients can fully heal after 7 days.

Minimally Invasive Procedure

The most significant difference between an NSV and a traditional vasectomy is, obviously, a scalpel is not required for an NSV. With such a minimally invasive technique, patients can expect drastically reduced trauma to the surrounding tissue, improving the overall quality of the experience.

Fewer Potential Complications

The risks associated with the no-scalpel vasectomy technique are extremely low. Studies have shown that NSVs offer fewer post-operative complications than SIVs, particularly concerning infection and haemorrhage (bleeding).

A 2017 study (Sandhu and Kao) showed that:

  • Haemorrhage rates in NSVs are around 1%, compared to over 11% in SIVs.

  • Infection rates are also significantly lower, with just over 3% in NSV patients compared to 14% in SIV patients.

Faster Procedure and Minimal Discomfort

As an NSV is a minimally invasive procedure, it is much quicker to perform with less pain and discomfort throughout. A no-scalpel vasectomy can be performed with local anaesthetic in an outpatient setting.  The no-scalpel method usually takes less than 30 minutes, with only mild discomfort or tenderness felt, which can be easily treated with over-the-counter pain relief.

Faster Recovery Time

As a no-scalpel vasectomy procedure doesn’t require stitches or an incision, patients have a faster recovery period. In fact, most patients can return to their normal activities within a day or two.

No Visible Scarring

NSVs leave no visible scars behind, as the procedure involves only a small puncture, eliminating the need for stitches.

Highly Effective

Sounding like an NSV might be too good to be true? Well, it’s not! NSVs have a success rate of over 99%, making them just as successful as traditional vasectomies, minus the concerns patients have initially.

Ready to arrange an appointment

With fewer complications found, a quicker recovery, and no visible scarring,  a scalpel-free vasectomy easily becomes the more appealing option for males looking for permanent contraception solutions. Knowing these no longer have to be performed as surgical procedures can also increase the appeal for men who have considered undergoing a vasectomy, but were uncomfortable with what the procedure entailed.
